Why MPCB (Motor Protection Circuit Breaker) is used?

Motor Protection Circuit Breakers (MPCBs), as the name implies, are specialized electro mechanical devices used with motor circuits to perform important function I.e. isolation, motor protection and control of motor (ON/OFF) It also provide protection against various electrical faults e.g. Short circuits line to ground and line to line of faults.

The main function of MPCB is to trip the motor when it draws current exceeding the set limits. The current limit can be set manually.

The other important feature of MPCB is to reconnect the motor automatically to the supply after the fault elimination

MPCBs protects motor against overload and short circuit faults. The MPCBs are provided with bi-metallic strips for thermal overload protection and magnetic coil for short circuit protection

MPCBs also protects motors against phase imbalance. In case of phase imbalance, the motor does not work properly, resulting in overheating. With the use of MPCB, the motor automatically get disconnected. MPCBs combine short circuit and overload protection in a single compact unit.

The MPCBs can be used in two ways:

  • It can be be used for directly switching the motor making it very cost effective.
  • It can be used along with a contactor as MPCBs combine thermal as well as short circuit protection, it will trip and interrupt even small overloads and contactor will be used for switching the load.

Application & Uses

  • Electric Motors
  • Water Pumping System
  • Air conditioners, compression, chillers, heat pumps, cooling towers, Attu’s etc.
  • Elevators, Cranes, Lift motors etc.
  • Industrial conveyor and other machinery
